20 Meters of Retaining Wall

When you decide that your yard needs an overhaul ready for Summer's Fun, then Brisbane Handyman & Building Maintenance Services can help you knock it out of the Park.

This particular project, on Brisbane's South Side, required the construction of a continuous Twenty Meter long Concrete Sleeper Wall, with Galvanised "I" Beam, Retaining Wall Posts. The sloping bank lessened the usable activity space around the Swimming Pool. The Retaining wall will recover much needed usable area around the pool.

Once the Posts were dug using an Auger attachment for the Mini Loader, it was time to concrete in the Steel Posts. Leaving the concrete to set for a few days is an important part of the process to ensure the long-term stability of the wall. This gave us time to set the Finished height before we loaded in the weighty sleepers.

Using the aid of a diesel Toro and a petrol Kanga loader/auger, to move the sleepers, lightened the load on our already weary backs. This work is not for the fainthearted and winter is certainly the right season for this work in the South East of Queensland. Concrete Sleepers can weigh from between 70 to 90 kilograms so working smarter not harder is vitally important. Risk assessments for lifting heavy loads must be employed to protect from back injury and strain.

On to the Earth Moving...the other 20

20 Cubic Meters of Soil

Now that the Sleepers are loaded into position, we move onto the task of Earth Moving. Our Project required close to 30 cubic meters of soil. Doing this in stages is important. The settling and compaction of the soil will naturally occur, but that won't get the job done. To help achieve the desired height to lay the Turf we staged the loading-in of soil, adding moisture to the soil aids the process.

The Mini Loads are, "worth their weight" for this sort of work. Access, although tight, required us to navigate through a gate on an incline. This made each trip demanding as far as the level of concentration needed for each bucket load of soil. One wrong movement could have resulted in an accident so, "steady as she goes" was the order of the day.

Our Client was very happy with what we achieved. The planning and execution of the plan was seamless. Once the Turf is laid I will update this post.
